If elected to Council, I will propose an Environmental Mapping Project, maybe with a different name but the same effect, as this will put increased focus on Federal Way's environmental standards, including the quality of water, sewer and storm drainage infrastructure, littering and graffiti problems, contingency plans for natural disasters, and so forth. The list, of course, could be in the scores, but you get the idea.
My plan will include putting this new agency under an existing commission, or perhaps making it a separate commission unto itself, and dividing Federal Way into 20-or-so equal geographical areas, not divided evenly by population, but by square mileage or some other spatial measure. Each of these twenty areas will then have an environmental steward of its very own, which would essentially be a volunteer position, although regular stipends would be paid by the City. Stewards would be responsible for researching information pertinent to their responsibilities, reporting problems, suggesting solutions, and basically being the "green" look-out for the area under their particular purview.
These areas would be numbered 1 to 20, and once an ordinance is passed that authorizes this agency, the Council would immediately post advertisements looking for Federal Way residents willing to volunteer (with stipends) in this environmental endeavor. This agency could be up and running within a month or two after the written plan/ordinance is passed into law, and would greatly improve Federal Way's overall environmental quality. Help me get this started by electing me to the Council, among other great ideas that I will have as time passes by. Thank you!
